Good morning from me and this common ninebark (Physocarpus), a new-to-me native plant that @digitnyc17 planted in the new beds. 🌸

NB: It's a dwarf variety because the full-size get too big for even a large container.

For the past seven years I’ve been educating mys

For the past seven years I’ve been educating myself, little by little, about plants and trees native to this land of the Lenape people that we call the New York City Borough of Queens. I’ve experimented with containers, raised beds, and streetside plantings. Inevitably some attempts have been less successful than others. My “pollinator garden” in an old sidewalk tree bed — which I wrote about in a local paper several years ago — hasn’t worked out so far despite a few different gambits. But the Virginia rose I started in a large backyard container a couple years ago is big enough now that it’s newly transplanted to the front yard, along with a native blue wild indigo (baptisia australis) and a couple of (non-native) Zephirine Drouhin and a dwarf lilac.

Just for fun, I'm planning to post an irregular series on native planting at Medium. Calling all fellow gardeners and lovers of pollinators in these parts and beyond–advice, corrections, general shooting of the shit welcome. Link in bio!

I took these photos of the backyard on Friday and meant to take better ones this weekend but spent every day outside working and today catching up on inside work. *Immense* thanks to Angeles Mojica of Dig It Sustainable Landscape Design (@digitnyc17) for designing this plan and planting with such care and to Luis Gonzalez Marquez of Luccio Construction and his team for building the fence, planters, and shed. They are the nicest people, with the nicest crews. And now while I will continue to hope that the neighboring complex reconsiders its enthusiasm for Round-Up, I'm looking forward to watching everything flourish and feeling safe eating herbs and berries and feeding the birds out back. You'll be seeing a lot more of these new plant friends.
