Another year, another Booker

James Lasdun’s Seven Lies makes the Booker Prize longlist alongside the latest from Kiran Desai, Sarah Waters, David Mitchell, Nadine Gordimer, Claire Messud, Peter Carey, and more.

The bookies, who “have always been completely wrong,” are putting odds on David Mitchell, who was on the shortlist for Cloud Atlas year before last, over two-time winner Peter Carey. Odds on Sarah Waters’ latest are 7-1. Hers is the only book on the list I’ve read in full; I enjoyed it less than I did Affinity.
