Lalami on Ben Jelloun

In Exile and the Kingdom, Laila Lalami discusses the fiction and other writings of Moroccan writer Tahar Ben Jelloun, whose latest novel, The Last Friend, recently appeared in the states from The New Press.

Ben Jelloun has won the Prix Maghreb, the Prix Goncourt and the International IMPAC Dublin Award, and been mentioned as a contender for the Nobel. But Lalami observes that he “remains virtually unknown in America” outside of “academic circles that specialize in Francophone North African literature.”
