“A dutiful course in degradation”

Anthony Lane maintains that J.T. Leroy is “just the hoax that the rage for confessional writing has been asking for.”

He, or she, has punched all the right buttons, telling of losers, abusers, cross-dressers, and crackpots, enabling eager readers to feel doubly validated in their response. (The announcement that James Frey, the author of the drink-sodden “A Million Little Pieces,” also had the nerve to make stuff up is great news — a little more salt on the margarita’s rim.) All I need now is to hear that Dave Pelzer is, in fact, an eighty-five-year-old Frenchwoman who collects fine china, and I will be a happy man.
