Muhammed caricatures

Twelve anti-Muslim cartoons, one of which depicts the Prophet Muhammed wearing a bomb as a turban, continue to ignite protests worldwide. (The leader of Hezbollah argues “that if Muslims had executed British novelist Salman Rushdie others would not dare to insult Islam.”)

But writer Laila Lalami says, “Leave the cartoonist alone! He has a right to his stupidity!” And today she notes that the press’ response in North Africa and the Middle East has been more nuanced than newspapers in the West have let on.
