Speculative fiction recommendations

The best efforts of others in the Maud household notwithstanding, I remain shamefully ignorant about the bulk of speculative fiction.

But when I want a suggestion, Matt Cheney of The Mumpsimus is my man. He’s patient with the sci-fi and fantasy challenged — and, coincidentally, his best-of-2005 list for Locus includes two titles that overlap with my own favorites from last year. (Via the only Bond Girl in my book.)
