First literary loves

Nicholson Baker, Sam Lipsyte, Gish Jen, Andrew Wylie and others recall the books they loved in college.

Predictably, the most nauseating response comes from David Brooks, self-appointed Northeastern Expert on All Things Red State. “This is going to sound awfully pompous,” he begins. His conclusion is equally (and uncharacteristically) clear-eyed.
