Zadie Smith: “read Hilary Mantel”

On BBC’s Radio 4 last week, Zadie Smith took exception to the way her comments about England were presented in a recent New York magazine interview. (See also “Literary stardom sticks in her teeth.”)

In email late last Friday, Smith reiterated her objections, but didn’t want to dwell on the interview. Instead, she asked that I pass along her “huge recommendation for Hilary Mantel’s Beyond Black.”

“I’m so sad not to see it on the shortlist,” she said, “and more people really need to get with the concept that Mantel is one of the best writers in England.”
