Call for appreciations

Recently, I spent some time in one of my favorite independent bookstores in Seattle. Across the street, the brand new grocery story had piles of the new Tom Clancy, at 40% discount, stacked like donut boxes near the checkout. I got to thinking about what I love about indie bookstores – how the employees generally love books, and have a broad enough knowledge to know how to guide customers with widely varying tastes. One of the pleasures of being a regular at a local indie bookstore is getting recommendations based on your own likes and dislikes, by knowledgable employees who read widely themselves. That’s what I still love about Bailey-Coy.

I’d love to know (and post) any appreciations of your favorite local indie bookstore. You can find me at annie at maudnewton dot com.
