On the Hay Festival

This year’s Hay Festival includes appearances from Zadie Smith, Kazuo Isghiguro and many other writers. For those who can’t attend, the Guardian is providing streaming audio of some events (archived here), along with brief reports at its Hay Festival blog.

So far there’s little blog reportage of literary interest — at least to this Yank — but I like the “Hayish” remarks overheard in area bookstores:

[From the other side of the poetry shelves where I was browsing, in a tone of profound and mounting disgust] “Bloody Hell! Where do they keep their Tennyson?” Close second [mother to her small daughter, who was running away]: “Bronte! Come back here now!”
