Banville provides my birthday motto*

At a Three Lives event celebrating the NYRB Classics release of J.G. Farrell’s Troubles on Friday night, John Banville quipped:

There is no such thing as a large whiskey. And there is no such thing as a short reading.

(Banville’s introduction to the Farrell book appears online.)

Banville’s latest novel is reviewed in Prospect Magazine. Look for an interview with him at The Elegant Variation later this week or early next.

* And Christopher Hitchens’ everyday motto.
