Unlike Maud, I admire Sideways, but I have to agree with A.O. Scott’s recent comments that it is the most over-rated film of the year. It’s a lovely, intelligent, funny film. But I can’t help but think that the reason it’s being so critically acclaimed is because so much money is put into so many films that turn out so dreadfully. In comparison, this very good film looks like a masterpiece.

Scott thinks that critics (apparently a moody, solipsistic, alcohol-imbibing bunch) are thrilled to have a character they so strongly identify with at the heart of a movie. But I think it’s that this film makes you want to drink lots and lots of really expensive wine, just like Tampopo makes you want to eat noodles and Big Night makes you want to eat Italian.
