She invokes the Jonathan Franzen/Oprah debacle, acknowledges the increasing power of televised book clubs and then reviews some writers’ pathetic attempts to stay in the limelight (e.g., “Martin Amis, recently caught rabbiting on about his pilates in the features pages of a daily, in order to keep his visibility high”).
