George Gurley provides the astonishing news that last week’s Paris Review shindig was short on strippers and trapeze acts but not on Matthiessen-worshipping “Carole King lookalikes.”

He also lists words that stumped participants in last week’s literary spelling bee, held to benefit the Council of Literary Magazines and Presses. Lev Grossman won with “callipygian,” beating out Myla Goldberg, Thomas Beller, Tama Janowitz, Adam Haslett, Heidi Julavits, James Frey, Lucinda Rosenfeld and more. (Second and third items.)
