In an article about doomed film adaptations, Russell Scott Smith notes that the screen version of “Memoirs of a Geisha — a project wracked by delays for eight years — escaped development hell (at least temporarily) when Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon star Zhang Ziyi signed on to play the lead.”

The adaptation of A Confederacy of Dunces, however, is still off. A Hollywood Reporter columnist reportedly observed: “Projects like this provide a lot of work for people in Hollywood. . . . But they don’t lead to movies.”
