Discursive commentary

At lunch last week, I was boring Terry Teachout with some of my grand Theories About The Weaknesses of Contemporary U.S. Literature (Especially in Comparison to the Efforts of My Favorite British Writers). Terry, good sport that he is, chimed in to praise Anthony Powell’s “technique of alternating Hemingway-like naturalistic dialogue with discursive commentary.” (I’ve not read Powell.) Now the excellent Mr. Teachout has posted some examples.
