John Crowley says Thomas Berger’s current novel, Adventures of the Artificial Woman, “is not only about an animatronic robot, it reads rather as though it were written by one.” I felt the same way about Berger’s last book, Best Friends: A Novel, which made a bunch of best of 2003 lists.
