Poet Kay Ryan wins $100,000

“Outsider” poet Kay Ryan has been awarded the $100,000 Ruth Lilly Prize from the Poetry Foundation.

Winning the Lilly “made me feel wonderful to know there are many ways of achieving recognition. One way is staying home and doing your work and not gadding about,” she said.

The 59-year-old native of San Jose, Calif., has spent the last 33 years as a part-time teacher of basic writing skills in Marin County.

“I like it,” she told Salon.com several years ago. “It’s just as uncomplicated as giving blood.”

I’m not sure how “outsider” you are when The New Yorker has been publishing your work for ten years but whatever. At least her bathing habits don’t come up. Via Bookninja.
