Writers ask Oprah to revive book club, singlehandedly restore fiction market

ZZ Packer, Junot Diaz, A.M. Homes, Francisco Goldman, Shirley Hazzard, Oscar Hijuelos, Francine Prose, Padgett Powell, Pam Houston, Dan Chaon, Aimee Bender, Maud Casey, Jhumpa Lahiri, Elizabeth McCracken, Kathryn Harrison, Wendi Kaufman, Sheila Kohler, and Katharine Weber are among the writers petitioning Oprah Winfrey to reinstate her book club.

They argue, based on research conducted by M.J. Rose, that the public’s declining appetite for fiction following September 11, 2001, is attributable not to the events of that day but to the The Oprah Winfrey Book Club’s going off the air.

The open letter was delivered to Winfrey on April 20, 2005. (Via The Happy Booker; see also CAAF’s thoughts on the subject.)
