What’s that saying, “a gentleman is someone who could write a novel, but chooses not to”?

I mentioned last month the BBC series in which members of the public can submit conclusions for half-finished stories by well-known U.K. writers. Ian Rankin, crime fiction novelist, is among them. “I think there is at least a short story in everyone, I’m not sure there is a book in everyone though,” he tells an interviewer. (Via Bookninja.)
