Dinitia Smith calls it “[t]horoughly researched and a good read,” and says the new biography “gives a harsher portrait of Burnett’s ambivalence as a mother and of the abuse that she suffered at the hands of her second husband, Stephen Townesend” than previous books about the author’s life.
