Amazon’s used book purchasing service is now better than Alibris.
My latest find is a complete reprint of Wipers Times, a humor rag made by British soldiers during World War One. The newspaper was published irregularly on the semi-destroyed equipment of bombed-out French publishing houses, and was distributed to the men in the trenches. It’s full of grim black humor about life during wartime, and it had much ironic fun with the standard tone and formats of the newspaperwith Dear Abby-like recurring characters.
Once every two or three pages, I’m struck by how completely it foreshadows theonion.com.
Oh, and The Onion is no longer the best online humor site–check out Future Feed Forward.
