I hadn’t read any Anita Brookner until I started The Bay of Angels the night before last, at a friend’s recommendation. (This is the same friend who acquainted me with James Lasdun’s excellent debut novel, The Horned Man.)
I’ve only read a quarter of it so far, but it’s compelling. (I should admit that the Guardian’s digested read of The Bay of Angels is uncannily apt.) If you missed the book when it came out a couple of years ago, you might want to read a review, and an interview with the author.
