The Smart Set: Lauren Cerand’s weekly events

The Smart Set is a weekly feature, compiled, often with care, by Lauren Cerand, that appears Mondays at 12:30pm and highlights the best of the week to come. Special favor is given to New York’s independent booksellers and venues, and low-cost and free events. Please send details to lauren@maudnewton.com by the Thursday prior to publication, with the event’s date in the subject line.

“The Mini Set: Kind of like Champagne in a Can” Edition

Remember when I requested literary listings for an all-Los Angeles edition this week, because that’s where I’ll be? Well, obviously I got none. Emma “Viva Snark” Garman and I are headed out to the Best Coast in five, no four — thanks, daylight savings time! — hours (time as of this writing: 2:05 am on Saturday night), and so I’ll make this brief:

In LA this week, hearting abortions and ruby red typewriters are a hot proposition. So is the blue astroturf sundeck at The Standard. In my carry-on tote: Kate Braverman’s Frantic Transmissions to and From Los Angeles and Lithium for Medea.

I’ll be back in New York just in time for the premiere, on Thursday, of Quality of Life, a film I’ve been quite fortunate to work on this spring. Insider tip: After Sunday’s screening, there’s a brief q&a on “DIY Publishing” with Richard Nash of Softskull Press. Come for the film, stay for the afterparty!
