MONDAY, 7.4: The Max Ernst Retrospective at the Metropolitan Museum of Art features quite an astonishing array of books and printmaking collaborations that the artist engaged in with friends and lovers, as well as a vibrant depiction of life amongst the writers, poets, and other assorted creative types who found themselves in good company with a true giant of his time. Highly recommended, and closing later this week. Special holiday hours: 9:30am-5:30pm, $15. Also, Laura Cantrell opens for Yo La Tengo and Stephen Malkmus and the Jicks at Battery Park. 3:30pm, free.

TUESDAY, 7.5: Check out My Summer of Love (a film so nice I saw it twice). As for the rest of the week, I think there’s a lesson in event-planning in there somewhere…

THURSDAY, 7.7: Jenny Holzer makes a special appearance at Artbook at Visionaire (last item). And, “The Reading Series at the International Center welcomes … Alicia Erian, author of the novel, ‘Towelhead’, Julie Otsuka, author of the novel ‘When the Emperor was Divine’ and Betty Shamieh, author of the critically acclaimed plays ‘Roar’ and ‘Chocolate in Heat’.” 50 West 23rd St., 7th floor. 7:30pm, free. Additionally, Holiday Reinhorn reads from her debut story collection, Big Cats, and fetes the book’s publication at Lolita. 7:00pm, no cover.

SUNDAY, 7.10: Jim Fusilli, who contributed a critical analysis of Pet Sounds to the 33 1/3 series of album appreciations, reads at “the beautiful old waterfront bar” Sunny’s in Red Hook as part of the Sunday’s at Sunny’s series. In addition to the aforementioned “music critic/novelist”, this eclectic event also features a science writer (Alan Burdick; author of Out of Eden: An Odyssey of Ecological Invasion) and a short story writer (Sharon Mesmer; author of In Ordinary Time). Noted: “You can buy books and get them signed by the authors… The bar (cash) will be open. Free coffee and Italian pastries and cookies will be provided.” 3:00pm, $3 suggested.
