Remainders: inspiration, plagiarism, cheating and disgrace

  • Brad Vice, a 31-year-old author in Mississippi, has been stripped of his Flannery O’Connor Award For Short Fiction after confirmation that one of the stories in his collection, The Bear Bryant Funeral Train, drew too directly on the work of another author, Carl Carmer. Vice said, “I am sorry I was ignorant of the principles of fair use at the time and honestly I’m still very confused about it.”
