Private: Rejection

Tom Payne considers the thousands of rejections received by the likes of Clare Morrall, whose Astonishing Splashes of Colour has just made the Booker Prize longlist. For a writer is to succeed, Payne suspects, he or she must “come to see rejection letters as scars that hurt for a while but soon become things you can show off.”

To that end, writers: please do send along quotes from your most outrageous rejection letters. I’ll post the best ones on this site, anonymously or with names attached. And I may seek your permission to use them for an article I’m planning to write.
