Join Oprah’s Book Club, complete your general ed

An English professor at UNC Charlotte teaches “Oprah’s Books,” a class “focus[ed] on novels championed by Winfrey”:

If it’s a lecture day, she might hold forth on narrative strategy in Wally Lamb’s “She’s Come Undone” or Toni Morrison’s “Song of Solomon.” Maybe she’ll discuss the controversy over Jonathan Franzen’s snubbing Winfrey — sort of — after she picked his novel “The Corrections.”

Some sessions, Pereira does an Oprah-mingles-with-the-audience imitation, walking out into the lecture hall to get students talking. Other days, the class watches tapes of Oprah’s Book Club programs. Students get extra credit for writing Winfrey their thoughts about her book club choices. As the term progresses, students grow as comfortable as Pereira with the acronym OBC.

This semester, Pereira’s course has been a popular option for students trying to satisfy UNCC’s general education requirements.
