Need a primer on the ways the New York Times and other newspapers — but particularly the New York Times (and did I mention the New York Times?) — have dropped the ball in covering the Bush administration’s Iraq policies? Try Michael Massing’s “Unfit to Print?,” from the latest New York Review of Books.
If you read the whole thing, you’ll be pretty much caught up. I say “pretty much” because I think you’d need to see Control Room, the Al-Jazeera documentary, to understand the Iraqi side of things. Control Room isn’t a perfect film — it’s unfocused, for one thing — but it’s an antidote to the rah-rah propaganda the U.S. media are always passing off as reporting.
The documentary was in the news again last Friday after the Pentagon ordered a military spokesman featured in the film not to talk. He plans to retire from service.
