Sandra Day O’Connor blasts Republican attacks on U.S. courts

Former U.S. Supreme Court Justice Sandra Day O’Connor has blasted Republican leaders’ attacks on the courts and warned that therein lies the slide into dictatorship. A Reagan appointee, O’Connor seemed markedly conservative in the post-Warren era before reactionaries Scalia and Thomas arrived on the scene.

Cass Sunstein, author of Radicals in Robes: Why Extreme Right-Wing Courts Are Wrong for America, praised her in the Los Angeles Times last summer, calling her “[c]onservative in the literal sense of the word … a great stabilizing force on the Rehnquist court, and therefore for the nation as a whole.” (Radicals in Robes was Dahlia Lithwick’s favorite legal book of 2005. You can read a brief excerpt in the middle of this post.)
