New Zadie Smith, Winterson; Elvis Costello confirms his position as The New Sting

Publisher’s Lunch reports that Zadie Smith has sold a new novel (On Beauty) and a non-fiction book about writing (Fail Better). Jeanette Winterson’s Lighthousekeeping will appear in the U.S. in the Spring of 2005.

In other deal news, I hadn’t thought it was possible for Elvis Costello’s no-longer-angry-at-all-but-really-quite-obsequious-and-schmoozy shtick to further poison the well of my former adulation, but his forthcoming books will probably prove me wrong. These include “a memoir, riffing from some of his song lyrics, and a book about playing the guitar and making music.” Next he’ll be doing Disney soundtracks.
