Manga dominates Japanese bookstore

Marie Mockett of Japundit reports that Kinokuniya, the Japanese bookstore in Rockefeller Center, has reorganized its shelves and “given the most real estate” to manga and anime. “Weaving in between the aisles were hip kids dressed in outfits you would see in Harajuku on a Sunday,” she says.

The shift has sparked debate at Japundit, she notes in email, “with some celebrating the rise of anime not only in Kinokuniya, but also in Barnes and Noble, and others lamenting that its popularity misrepresents Japan.”
