Katrina Benefit/New Stories From the South party with ZZ Packer — and savory crawfish

Apart from heavy drinking, if anything will make August in New York City palatable, it’s the ZZ Packer/New Stories from the South party that Algonquin and Paste magazine are throwing August 28 to benefit KARES, a New Orleans organization established to help artists and writers post-Katrina, and Housing Works.

I’ll be emceeing. We’ll have trivia and prizes, brief readings from some of the NSFS contributors, and, courtesy of Mara’s Homemade and Acme, plenty of Cajun eats. Rumor has it the Mara’s delicacies include savory crawfish and cheese pie. Suggested donation is $5.

ZZ Packer guest-edited this year’s New Stories from the South, so you know it’s got to be good.

I’m giving away a copy of the anthology and some compilation cds from Paste. If you haven’t won one of my giveaways in the past, enter by emailing me at maud [at] maudnewton [dot] com before noon EST tomorrow (8/8), with “Crawdads in New York City” in the subject line. All entries will be assigned numbers based on the order received, and the randomizer will choose a winner. Drew Smith of Austin wins this time.
