I’ll use any excuse to mention Graham Greene

Robert McCrum devotes this week’s column to the Edwardians. I’d forgotten that this year is the hundredth anniversary of Graham Greene’s birthday.

I’ve mentioned it before, but In Search of a Beginning, a “memoir of the novelist by his long-time mistress, Yvonne Cloetta,” appears in the U.K. on April 5. In 2001, following the publication of Shirley Hazzard’s book about Greene, Cloetta and Hazzard scuffled in the NYRB over Greene’s loyalties and tenderness (or lack thereof).
