For the Telegraph, Andy Martin reviews Growing Up with Lucy: How to Build an Android in Twenty Easy Steps, by Steve Grand:
In his cheerfully self-deprecating but hugely inspiring book, Steve Grand confesses that he “lied about the number of steps”. There is a long way to go before liquid-metal terminators start coming off the assembly line: Lucy is still struggling to tell the difference between an apple and a banana. You may think that Arnold Schwarzenegger’s dialogue is a bit limited, but Lucy’s intermittent burps make him look like a master of witty repartee. This may be artificial intelligence, but not as we know it.
