Carey on the literary hoax

Benedicte Page interviews Australian writer Peter Carey about the James Frey scandal and literary hoaxes more generally. “[T]he US is a country run by liars going to war on a fantasy, so it’s interesting to see people getting self-righteous about James Frey,” he says. “I don’t see why everyone gets into such a fucking uproar because an addict is a liar!”

Carey’s Theft: A Love Story, appeared last week in his native Australia. The novel centers on an art-world con. “Key to the story of Theft,” Page says, “is the idea of valuation; the difficulty, even the absurd arbitrariness, with which the cultural establishment assigns worth.” (Via The Literary Saloon.)
