Private: “Are you getting hot for the next one?”

Julian Barnes considers the position of the peacenik after the war, in light of the apparent victory in just three weeks, relatively few western casualties and Iraqis dancing in the streets.

He imagines a warnik asking, “Well, peacenik, are you happy now that peace is coming?”

His answer: “No, because I don’t think this war, as conceived and justified, was worth a child’s finger.”
