A different kind of threesome

Aimee Bender’s “On a Saturday Afternoon,” up at Nerve, is that increasingly rare thing: an erotic short story that surprises. (Via Bookslut.)

Bender deals with prurient situations, and she deals with them bluntly, but she avoids the kind of unadorned brutality you so often find in contemporary American short stories — the kind that’s supposed to shock but only leaves you bored and indifferent. (Yes, we know the character fucked her dog and her husband simultaneously before strangling them with a leash, you want to say, but why does this matter?) She goes behind the mechanics and pleasures and ugliness of sex to the longings that draw people together.
