The Cthulhu witnesses

October 3, 2005 | Comments Off

You probably had to grow up in a fundamentalist household to appreciate this brilliant Lovecraftian parody of the Jack Chick tracts my mom (and in my preteen years, at her behest, I) tried to pawn off on unsuspecting picnickers in Tropical Park.

Chick’s Christian pamphlets may have been as great a force as the Left Behind series in molding mainstream U.S. Protestantism. And even if their influence hasn’t been quite as strong, it’s been longer-term. For background on Chick and the fascination he holds for American cartoonists, track down issue two of Daniel Raeburn’s The Imp.
